Pasta Everyday? Why Not?
Pasta has long been labeled a fattening filler. Today, however, it is regarded as a healthy and basic food from the Grain Products group of the Canada Food Guide. Pasta is rich in complex carbohydrates, moderately high in plant protein and low in fat and also a good source of thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and iron. Like anything, it could be fattening if consumed in disproportionate quantities. Our nutrition experts believe that pasta represents an integral part of a balanced meal plan so use it sensibly and enjoy!
Did you know there is such a large variety of pasta available today that you can practically have a different one every day of the year? With the choices ranging from flavored pasta, fresh pasta and various pasta shapes, to whole grain pasta and egg noodle pasta, the only challenge is your creative flair.
A helpful hint: For storage purposes, remember to keep dried pasta in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Store fresh pasta in a plastic wrap. Golden rules to remember when cooking pasta: Use plenty of water, do not overcook and flavor the cooking water with salt or fresh lemon juice.
